This evening's sermon was most interesting, although I am still not quite sure what it was about. It is possible that I missed something, but I cannot recall how the preacher connected the Lamentations of Jeremiah, the boy Jesus in the Temple, and the situation in Central America. The jokes were good, especially the one about the priest in the tropical bird-house, but I am afraid that I was left longing for some real spiritual sustenance rather than entertainment with a religious flavour.

I do become annoyed at people who come out of Chapel whistling hymn tunes. It turns a paean of praise into "Pick of the Pops", and I wish they would realise that for many of us this cheapens our worship. As trainee clergy we should surely treasure our sacred hymnology instead of gaily trilling it around like early-morning milkmen.
