LENT AND EASTER 2010

Lent and Easter give many opportunities for liturgical experimentation.  Wenchoster Cathedral has always been in the forefront of such developments, and ordinands at the Wenchoster Theological Seminary are encouraged to use their imaginations in the creation of their in-house liturgy.   This year we are fortunate to have several of their offerings made accessible to the wider public.

Sunday 28th March PALM SUNDAY (British Summer Time begins – clocks go forward 1 hour!)
8.00am BCP Holy Communion in the Mandylion Chapel.
9.50am Palm Sunday procession begins from the west doors.

10.15am Procession halts at the Market Cross.

10.45am Procession returns to the Cathedral.

11.00am Eucharist, with the Blessing of Palms and the Passion Gospel.

12.00am Baptisms
6.30pm BCP Evensong with Blessing of Palms and the Passion Gospel.

 

Holy Monday 29th March - Holy Wednesday 31st March

8.00am BCP Holy Communion in the Mandylion Chapel.
8.00pm Compline in the Mandylion Chapel.

 

Maundy Thursday 1st April
7.30pm Eucharist and Washing of the Feet in the Cathedral.

8.30pm Stripping of the altars followed by Vigil until midnight – hot soup available in the Refectory until 11.00pm. 

 

Good Friday 2nd April
12.00 - 1.00 Stations of the Cross in the Cathedral cloisters.

1.00 - 2.00 Service of Meditations on the cries of the onlookers at Golgotha.  The choir will sing an anthem based on the 7 Last Words of Jesus on the Cross.
2.00 - 3.00 Liturgy for Good Friday including the Passion Narrative. 

4.00pm Choristers Hot Cross Bun party in the Deanery.

 

Holy Saturday 3rd April (NOT Easter Saturday as the BBC insists on calling it!)

8.00pm Easter Ceremonies – including the Lighting of the New Fire in the Cloister garden, the procession of the Paschal Candle, the singing of the Exultet, and the  renewal of Baptismal Promises.

 

Sunday 4th April EASTER DAY
5.30am Dawn Service of Light for Easter Day on the banks of the Wen, followed by full English breakfast (£5) in Banqueting Room in the De Flageolet Tower.
10.00am High Eucharist, followed by an Easter Egg hunt in the Bishop’s Palace. 

 
 

 

 
All enquiries about the music used in the Cathedral worship may be e-mailed too The Canon Precentor putting "Cathedral music enquiry" in the Subject line.  We welcome constructive comments about our programme, as well as donations towards the Choir's Christmas Party at the Wenchoster Pie-a-rama.

Applications for entry into the Choir school should be addressed in the first instance to The Dean of Wenchoster.  A medical examination will be required for all applicants.  Reductions in fees will be offered to those who show exceptional potential in range and movement, or who make a personal contribution to the Dean's Development Fund (for the establishment of link parishes in Aquitaine, France), or who fund the annual Chapter pilgrimage to the Black Virgin of Rocamadour.
