THE WEST DOOR

The great West Door of Wenchoster cathedral is perhaps the most striking of its architectural attributes.

Imposing in scale and decoration, the door dates from the mid 14th century and still possesses the 10 statues of former bishops flanking the entrance.

In this detail are seen the images of John de Wicken (1173-1209), Hardrada Dogbreath (1209-1235) and Magnus the Monk (1235-1262).

The security fencing across the the top of the entrance steps was installed in 1962 following the violent confrontations between the "Monstrance Mayhem" motorcycle group of Chapter clergy and the Wenchoster Police force on the August Bank Holiday Monday.
